All my photographs are about meetings
and about coups de foudre - love at first sight. To do that type of
photography, one must wipe the canvas clean to prepare for chance encounters,
be open and aware to such moments, otherwise it becomes a cliché - already seen
and expected.

Galerie
Francesca presents Chance Encounters,
an exhibition of six painters and a poet, whose works deal somehow, with
chance. Chance, is often viewed as a
stroke of luck, and therefore, is often opposed to skill. However, as this exhibit attempts to show,
chance often works for the prepared mind.
Novelist and journalist Scott Anderson says, “History is often the tale
of small moments—chance encounters or casual decisions or sheer
coincidence—that seem of little consequence at the time, but somehow fuse with
other small moments to produce something momentous, the proverbial flapping of
a butterfly’s wings that triggers a hurricane.”
Artists
Louie Ignacio, Cid Reyes, Joy Rojas, and Fred Tan, rely heavily on the beauty
that fluid paint produces. Working with
the flow of paint on textured surfaces, these artists work in harmony with
their medium, and the earth’s gravitational pull; to create dynamic abstract
works which evoke emotion. Their
aesthetic choices are manifested through skillful use of chance as they flick,
pour, mix and scrape paints of their peculiar palettes. Collectively, their work exemplifies a deep
respect and understanding of their medium, and a peculiar acceptance of it,
resulting to working with it, instead of on it.
Sio
Montero on the other hand is preoccupied with wear and tear as they manifest
time’s passing. His work involves scraping
off and peeling off layers of paint, to show what lies beneath. His wabi-sabi
aesthetic seems to illustrate an acceptance of impermanence and the transitory
nature of life.
Painter
Fitz Herrera tries to create harmony by juxtaposing opposing visual elements –
dull versus bright, colorful versus neutral, textured versus smooth, and sharp
versus undefined. In creating the works,
each element is a reaction to something that is already there. The end, of course, is like a tapestry of
life, where harmony is achieved between these different and differing elements.
Oliver
Ortega provides autopoetry, poems created from removing words from existing
works by other artists. Like the works
of the painters, his poetry tries to mine the inner and hidden beauty of what
is out there, and in plain sight.
